Week One Blog

Making Your Own Days, has helped me better understand poetry. Chapter one focuses on poetry as a second language, which is something I never once thought of. I’ve never viewed poetry as another language, but I understand how Koch describes that there are words within words. There are hidden meanings within each poem, and different styles help build the way one reads it. Koch explains that reading poetry not only requires talent, but effort in learning the different rules of each style.
In chapter two, titled “Music”, Koch describes different types of poems and how each can be written. Koch explains the use of stanzas, rhyming and repetition, and its importance. It’s very interesting that simple punctuation can change the entire meaning of the poem, also changing the sound.  Poetry can be read different ways, which is why the poet’s choice of words is extremely important. Not only rhyme, but rhythm and repetition can simply change the sound in a poem.
The different assignments have helped me better understand poetry and how it will forever change.  Whether one poet uses sounds and ideas from another, one will always learn a new style, or idea, to fit their own writing. I have never thought of poetry as another type of language, but it’s important to actually listen to the sound of the poem. The poet’s creative detail determines the hidden meaning of the poem, which is why detail and sound are important. The readings and assignments are really interesting, and help me think in different ways, from a different point of view. I’ve come to realize that anyone can write poetry, it’s just a matter of how their words are written that actually makes poetry come to life.
